Description
The Licancabur is the most beautiful volcano in the area of San Pedro de Atacama. Not only does it dominate the oasis itself with its perfect conical * soma, but it also captures the eyes and attention of all observers, as if an air of mystery were floating around them.
The Licancabur is a special volcano: the view stops on its slopes in an instinctive way, hypnotizing us, making the memory of other volcanoes disappear for a moment.
The Licancabur possesses one of the most abundant and well-studied ruins complexes of all the high altitude sanctuaries existing in Chile. Its mystical importance, according to Reinhard, was probably before the Incant.
There is no absolute clarity about what kind of rituals were celebrated in the volcano. Being a very dry volcano, it seems unlikely that the reason for the ceremonies was fertility. The Licancabur hypothesis as a place of sun worship seems more reasonable.
Following is a synthesis of the structures found in the Licancabur volcano:
