Description
Ascent Volcano San Pedro is distinguished from many miles, being the highest peak in the area. Solitarios, together with his brother San Pablo, dominate the Atacama Desert from its more than 6000m, offering incredible views of the immensity and solitude that surrounds those who venture on their slopes to its summit.
From the geological point of view, San Pedro is a complex stratum composed of two cones; an older cone (the current summit), of basaltic lavas, affected by a collapse event, and a younger one, built within the amphitheater of the first cone. A parasitic eruption generated an 8km lava flow and a cone of scoria at the western base of the volcano known as the Poruna.
The historical background indicates the occurrence of volcanic activity in the central crater in 1877, 1891 and 1901. Although the last explosion was observed in 1911, the fumarolic activity (smoke and gases) persists, indicating that it is a center active volcanic, in which new eruptions may occur, with the consequent risk for mountaineering activities.
The ascent of San Pedro or San Pablo, is a journey towards absolute solitude. Who goes to these volcanoes will not stop to be overwhelmed by the immensity that is gradually revealed. Reaching the summit is as if one opened a window towards the most intimate highlands.
First Ascension
The first documented ascent was George Courty, member of a French expedition to the Chilean-Bolivian Andes led by Georges de Crequi-Montfort and E. Senechal de la Grande. Courty ascended to the summit of San Pedro on July 16, 1903, accompanied by the Chilean Filemón Morales. Cf. Chile Andinista: Its History. page 45. Evelio Echevarría.
