Description
The Ascent volcano Chiliques corresponds to a stratovolcano, located in the Chilean highlands of the Antofagasta Region, a few kilometers east of the town of Socaire, a town with which it maintains a close religious and astronomical relationship.
At the summit and near the main summit of the Chiliques volcano, ceremonial structures, rooms, stone walls, as well as local and Inca ceramics have been found. These findings show that this volcano was an Inca shrine of the first order.
The volcano had historically been considered “inactive” until April 2002 when infrared-thermal images acquired by the ASTER satellite confirmed the presence of “hot spots” in the main crater. This means that, like other volcanoes in the area, the Chiliques shows suggestive signs of reactivation.
