Description

Ascent of Pular Volcano (from Quechua “pullurqui” = tab) rises southeast of the great Atacama salt flat; It is one of the giants of the Andes, neighbor of the Socompa volcano (located to the south). It is located in the Chilean territory.

It was revered since ancient times by the ancient inhabitants of the area and today by the few atacameños that remain in the ayllu of Tilomonte, which is located about 40 kilometers from the volcano.

Father Le Paige wrote of the ascension, made on December 8, 1972:

… “Following our program of ascents to the summits of the Atacameña area, we reach the summit of the Pular volcano; in it we find a central ceremonial structure surrounded by firewood and a stove towards the northeast side, in addition to a circular pirca south of the structure. We were struck by finding two mice on top of the Volcano, one of them inside the ceremonial structure and the other immediately outside it. These rodents had been used as ritual pieces. “*

Conclusion

The firewood, the existing ruins and the stove for the offerings, are classic elements of the high mountain Inca sanctuaries. The construction that in the Pular is looking towards the famous sanctuary of the Quimal hill (northwest) is not random, and had (perhaps still has it for some) a mystical significance in times of the Inca empire.

There is also such a connection between these hills and volcanoes with the Licancabur, the Pili and other sanctuaries in the area. The findings, such as silver figurines with clothing, decorated pottery, and other highly elaborated elements, are typical of Inca sanctuaries.
