Description
Toco Cerro Toco, an old active volcano, like most of the hills and volcanoes in the area, is now extinct and is recognized as one of the most accessible and easy to ascend in the vicinity of San Pedro de Atacama.
The volcano is located about 60km southeast of San Pedro de Atacama (approximately 160km from Calama); going to Paso de Jama, which is located a little further north than the route that goes to Toconao.
Until about 20 years ago, one of the main deposits of sulfur, a mineral used at the time in the mining processes of Chuquicamata, among other important uses, was exploited at its base.
